Artist's Description

Sierra No. 3 is arguably the most photgraphed and fameous steam locomotive in the United States. Built by Rogers Locomotive Works in 1891, this 4-6-0 was shipped to Arizona to join the Prescot & Arizona Central Railway (P&AC). When the P&AC went bankrupt, No. 3 was brought to California by Thomas S. Bullock to become one of the first locomotives operated by the new Sierra Railway. Remarkably, it is still in operation today. No. 3's status as a fameous locomotives comes from its use in dozens of Hollywood movies and television shows. Credits include "High Noon," "Back to the Future 3," "Pettycoat Junction," "Little House on the Prarie," "Big Valley" and many others. Had we been at Railtown 1897, Jamestown, California, one day before No. 3 would have been the locomotive at the lead of the excursion train. But this day it was resting in the roundhouse with other Sierra Railway steam locomotives.
