Description
The imposing structure known at "The Organ" is made of layers of material deposited over a period of millions of years. The crinkly Dewey Bridge Member at the base represents tidal flats and tidal channels of an ancient shoreline system. There is a sharp boundary of the Dewey Bridge and the massive coastal dune complex sandstone of the overlying Slick Rock Member of the Entrada Sandstone. Weathering and erosion have exploited this plane of weakness to form alcoves and arches. The Dewey Bridge and the Slick Rock are both members oof the San Rafael Group which formed during the Triassic Period while dinosaurs roamed the earth. Some information quoted from "Geology Unfolded, An Illustrated Guide to the Geology of Utah's National Parks."
