Description
There are several observatories, in two complexes, at the summit of Mount Haleakala on Maui. The complex on the left is the National Solar Observatory. On the right is the Maui Space Surveilance & Super Computer Complex operated by the US Air Force. Under construction at the solar complex, on the far left, the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope or DKIST. It will be the worlds premier ground-based solar observatory. With its 4-meter (157.5-inch) primary mirror, DKIST is capable of distinguishing features down to 0.03 arc seconds or just 20-70 km (12-44 miles) wide at the suns surface. To achieve such fantastic resolutions the telescope will employ the latest adaptive optics technology to cancel the blurring effects of the atmosphere using a computer-controlled deformable mirror. It is scheduled for completion in 2019.
